Ahijah had deflected Jeroboam’s initial rebellion against Solomon by promising him that, because of Solomon’s apostasy, God would eventually allow the ten northern tribes of Israel (led by Jeroboam and his Ephraimite compatriots) to rebel successfully against Solomon’s successor and to become a separate kingdom under Jeroboam. Rehoboam’s foolish choice allowed this division to come to pass, but it was actually of God (II Chronicles 11:4).
